Australian golfer Ryan Peake has claimed the $1.8 million New Zealand Open, completing an extraordinary journey of redemption.
The 31-year-old kept his composure under pressure, sinking a clutch ten-foot putt to secure his first professional victory. A two-putt would have led to a four-man playoff, but Peake’s nerves of steel sealed the win.
Entering the final round with a solo lead, Peake shot an impressive five-under 66 on Sunday, finishing at 23-under—one stroke ahead of three players at 22-under. His victory also earns him an exemption into The Open Championship on July 17.
“Relief. I’m lost for words at the moment. It’s life-changing,” Peake said, holding back tears moments after sinking his tournament-winning putt.
He credited his coach, who also works with Australian rising star Elvis Smylie. Smylie burst onto the professional scene last year, winning two tournaments, including the Australian PGA Championship.
“I always knew I had it in me—it was just a matter of time,” Peake said. “Elvis was in a similar position not long ago, and our coach kept saying, ‘It’s just a matter of time.'"
Peake’s journey to the tournament was not without obstacles. Due to his criminal record, he faced delays in obtaining travel clearance and only arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday evening—just in time for his Thursday tee-off.
His win is even more remarkable given his past. A decade ago, Peake was a member of the outlawed Rebels motorcycle club and served five years in prison for a assault conviction at age 21.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Peake revealed that golf became his lifeline as he sought to turn his life around and distance himself from what he described as a “young and stupid” past.
He expressed gratitude to immigration officials in both Australia and New Zealand for granting him a travel visa—something he will require for all international tournaments.
Now a rookie on the Australasian Tour, Peake sits 21st on the order of merit, having delivered a string of strong performances. His triumph in New Zealand marks a new chapter in what has already been a remarkable comeback.
